By George’s mission is the preservation and production of lost or neglected musicals focusing primarily on the first half of the twentieth century, the Art Deco period (1925-1950). We present them using only the original script and songs written for that specific musical. BY GEORGE was named in honor of the many "Georges" who created musical comedy: George Abbott, George Balanchine, George M. Cohan, George Gershwin and George S. Kaufman. Joining that distinguished group: the late George Furth, who was highly supportive and enthusiastic about By George's first two shows. George Furth helped create the modern American musical in 1970 with his book for Stephen Sondheim's "Company". Coincidentally, Sondheim's first student musical was titled "By George".
